Outdoor learning is a broad term which encompasses anything from splashing in a puddle with your toddler to more structured activities in the form of Forest School or a guided walk in the woods.

Little Grasshoppers is a weekly under 5s’ Forest School activity based in the grounds of Lymefield Outdoor Learning Centre which aims to get you and your “Little Grasshoppers” out and about in nature, using all your senses to explore and play as you gain confidence and knowledge of your environment.

With Wendy, our level 3 Forest School Leader, your child will explore, make dens, build and cook on fires, look for minibeasts, play games, sing songs, use natural materials to create beautiful items to take home and make new friends while having fun.

Little Grasshoppers will be outside in all weathers, rain, snow… so dressing appropriately (both parents/carers and children) is essential for everyone’s comfort and enjoyment.

Advantages of learning outdoors

  • It is healthier to be outdoors and creates a sense of well-being.
  • The outdoors offers an endlessly versatile, changeable and responsive environment for all types of learning activities for children and adults.
  • Everything can be done on a bigger scale than indoors with lots of movement and bigger voices.
  • Learning outdoors offers a huge sense of freedom to move freely, to think, to speak and to engage in meaningful activities.
  • It lends itself to offering a wide range of challenges, physical, social, emotional and intellectual and helps children to understand how to be safe and aware of others.
  • Nature is fascinating to children and adults. They are motivated to play imaginatively, think creatively, reflect, construct and problem solve as they work together, co-operate and socialize.
